Yin and yang of drinks

I’ve just got back from visiting family in Singapore. It was hot, hot, hot, with temperatures hovering around 29°C to 30°C every day.

To keep hydrated, I enjoyed plenty of cooling drinks. When I shared my experience with a friend from Bury St Edmunds, she was curious and asked: "What exactly are cooling drinks?"

Cultural significance

This classification is deeply rooted in the yin-yang philosophy, where balance is key to maintaining good health.

The concept stems from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where foods and drinks are classified as yin – cooling (cooling) or yang – heaty (warming). People consume food and drinks based on seasonal climates, their own body constitution and the effects these have on the body’s balance.
